Effects of Skin Rehabilitation Massage Therapy on Burn Scars and Stress
Oh Jung-Ok

Abstract
Backgrounds: Hypertrophic scarring and stress is the principal problems of burn rehabilitation. SRMT is defined as the manipulation of the skin and underlying tissues with light palm stroking, acupressure, and an occlusive dressing by the certificated skin rehabilitation nurse and home management by the primary caregiver to provide benefits in physiological and psychological effects. This study was done to verify the effects of skin rehabilitation massage therapy (SRMT) on burn scars and stress.

Methods: One-group pretest-posttest design was applied to examine the effects of SRMT for 6 months in a group of 4 burn survivors. The sample was drawn from patients who were enrolled in a skin rehabilitation clinic in Seoul, Korea. A total of four burn patients, 2 men and 2 women participated in this study. The major dependent variables-including Height (using Medison SONOACE X4?) Blood perfusion status (using the PeriScan PIM 3 System?) Thermal status (using the IRIS 5000?) Skin color (using Konica Minolta CM-2500d Spectrophotometer?) of burn scars, Stress (using the Cocoro Stress Meter?) were measured at the beginning and at the end of the therapy to examine the effects of SRMT.

Results: Burn survivors receiving SRMT showed improved height, blood perfusion status, thermal status, and skin color of burn scars, and reduced stress at the end of the SRMT also.

Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that SRMT for burn survivors may improve their scars, and also reduce stress. (Journal of Korean Burn Society 2007;10:55-59)
